A Korean language course abroad is a special experience. In 1446, at the behest of King Sejong, the Hangeul alphabet was created to provide his people with a writing system suitable for the Korean language that was easy to learn. Before the creation of the Hangeul alphabet, Hanja (based on Chinese characters) was used. Curiously, the Korean Hangeul alphabet did not become established until 400 years after its creation, because until the end of the 19th century Hanja was considered the language of the Korean nobility. With Korean independence in 1945, Hangeul was declared an official script in both parts of the country. Nevertheless, Hanja is still used in scientific publications in South Korea today. Since 1949 only Hangeul is officially taught and written in North Korea.
